Changing Your Will

DO YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR WILL?

Once you’ve made your Will it’s tempting to sit back and relax and forget about it. But from time to time (at least every 5 years) it’s a good idea to take a fresh look at it to make sure it still takes account of your wishes. The last thing you want is for your good intentions to go to waste, or even worse for the people and causes you care about most to miss out on what you wanted for them.

Things happen in all our lives and, if you’re not careful, you could find yourself with a Will that no longer reflects your wishes.

An up-to-date Will really is the best way to make sure your wishes are carried out after your death and that the money you have worked hard for all your life actually does go to the people and the causes you want it to. If you don’t have a Will, or keep it up-to-date, your family could lose out to the State with your estate being eaten up in taxes. A simple review of your Will could help avoid all that.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU DUSTED OFF YOUR WILL?

Ask yourself this:

  • Welcomed a new child or grandchild into the family recently?
  • Lost a relative or close friend?
  • Got married?
  • Or divorced
  • House gone up in value?
  • Moved house?
  • Invested in a new piece of furniture or jewellery
  • Inherited from a friend or relative, or had a windfall?
  • Retired?

If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions it could well be time you looked at your Will.
(Even if you didn’t say yes to any of them, it’s always a good idea to check your Will from time to time.)

SAFE STORAGE OF YOUR WILL

Over 70% of those who die each year, die intestate. This means one of two things – either they did not make a Will or they did, but no-one could find it when it was needed. The solution is to have your Will stored in a secure place, safe and insured against loss, damage, fire or theft and retain a copy at home. We will provide a copy of your Will and ensure the safe storage of the original and provide a courtesy 5 yearly review of your Will, free of charge.

EXECUTOR HELP SERVICE

We fully recognise that your chosen executors will probably not be aware of the legal process involved in winding up an estate or of their legal duty as executors.

We at Seatons will on your behalf send out a suitable “Executor” information pack and thereafter advise your chosen executors of their legal responsibilities as executors and any question they may have.
