Will Signing

The procedure for signing and completing a Will is very important. The following arrangements need to be carried out.

  1. The testator should read the document carefully to ensure it accords with their wishes.
  2. The testator should date and sign the document at the end in the joint presence of two adult witnesses (the witnesses being present together with the testator at the same time and seeing the testator sign).
  3. The two witnesses should then subscribe the will below the testator’s signature by signing their names and writing their addresses and occupations clearly.
  4. No person taking a benefit under the document, or the spouse or civil partner of such a person, should be a witness (otherwise such a person will not be able to benefit under the document). A blind person cannot be a witness.
  5. Any alterations must be made before the testator signs the document and should be signed or initialled by the testator and the witnesses in the margin opposite the alteration.
  6. Nothing should be pinned, stapled, clipped or fastened in any way to the document.
  7. The Will should be checked to ensure it is properly signed and witnessed.
  8. The Will should then be placed in an envelope and filed away in a safe place (hopefully gathering dust for some time to come) until the time comes when you wish to review matters.
